No, I am not dead

14 Jun 2008 In: Linux, Ubuntu, myself

Unlike some might be thinking, no, I am not dead. However, I have been a little busy or unavailable lately.

The thing is that I have been running out of time lately and I have been charged with new roles and responsibilities in my professional, personal and educational life. It is too early to say whether it [this lack of available time] is going to be a temporary condition or it will last for the next several months.

So many things happened in the last few months, in fact so many things happened that I don’t even know from where to start. So I am not going to start from the beginning, nor mention everything or tell details. Let’s mention some of them in the order they happened:

  • I have been ‘disconnected’ for a long time because I was entirely devoted to a project that will be very useful for all Ubuntu users that speak Portuguese, and for the upcoming users as well. I will post news about this in the next couple of weeks [hopefully]. For now, you can call this project Olodu ;)
  • N810: At the end of the last year I was one of the 500 fortunate winners of a super-discount given by Nokia for developers to buy the wonderful device N810, which was much more than desired. For those who doesn’t know, the Nokia N810 is an Internet Tablet that runs the linux-based Maemo plataform. So from now on some posts related to this device/plataform are expected. Thanks Nokia (including Quim Gil) for this more-than-welcome gift and I also would like to thank my good friend Og Maciel, whom was very kind of making sure the device got to my hands.
  • The Ubuntu-BR’s Time de Documentação [Documentation Team] has now two new leaders. As I said at the beginning of this post, I haven’t had enough time to dedicate myself in the tasks I was assigned in the past, for this reason I decided to pass the leadership of the Time de Documentação for the competent hands of Rafael Sfair and Arlei Silveira. I am sure that they will be capable of improving even more the Team and make sure things will keep on track and getting better and better. I have explained more detailed this change in the discussion list.
  • I had the opportunity to go to the FISL 9.0 (9th edition of the International Forum of Free Software) this year. An amazing event that allowed me to meet several characters of the free and open source software community, including the Ubuntu-BR LoCo chaps, among them Fabio, Licio, Coringão, Lucas, Gondin, Jonh, Pereira, Tiago, linuxpoa, Fabrício, and others (sorry, I cant mention them all). I won’t review the event here, as there are several dozens of reviews around. Thanks everyone that came to meet me during the event and I apologise for those I couldn’t give enough attention.
  • I was invited to participate in the Ubuntu Developer Summit (Intrepid) and the FOSSCamp that happened from May 16 to 23, an once-in-a-life-time opportunity. Unfortunately I could not make it, I am really sorry for that and I have already sent my regrets and apologies. But anyway, thanks Canonical for the invitation, I hope to get the chance to participate in future UDSs and FOSSCamp.
  • The Hardy Heron was released! The Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, the most anticipated release of Ubuntu, is out (big news). Between April 22 to 26 the website www.ubuntu-br.org has registered the access record of its history. The website load was so high that I could not even update the page (with links to hardy, release notes, etc) for several hours.
  • … amongst other upgrades in my personal and professional life, which is out of the scope of this blog.

I cannot promise anything, but I hope to get the chance to post more details about the itens mentioned here in future posts.

That is nice to hear

Quoting Lyn Stephens from itshare.org.au about APTonCD:

Four installs today using aptoncd all went perfectly.
I am thinking that this is the best thing since Ubuntu
To enable non geeks to get results
love your work
Lyn
more rave
Hope you don’t mind lots of messages about success
This is what i have been praying for since my first introduction to Gnu/Linux
This is where we start to change the world, my obligate volunteers are thinking this is easier than a windows install
Your work has removed all the fuss with easyubuntu vs automatix by enabling the users of such things to “just do it” and they are in control!
Lyn from itshare.org.au

Thanks Lyn, Laudeci and I really appreciate your comments. Things like that makes me very happy :)

Unfortunately I haven’t had much time lately but as soon as I finish some projects I’m working on, I’ll go back to APTonCD.

Uboontu.com: The Ubuntu Search Engine

23 Sep 2007 In: Linux, Uboontu, Ubuntu

Hello all, the Ubuntu Search Engine has moved to Uboontu.com!

Uboontu

Thanks to all feedback received the page was improved and now is better placed — www.uboontu.com is easier to remember (an obvious sort of fusion between Ubuntu and Google’s name as it describes well the search engine).

Please, update your bookmarks and your Open Search Plugin for Firefox. The old website and plugin still working and will remain for some days, then I will redirect it to Uboontu.com.

A internationalized version is on the way, if you run a LoCo or would like to have a version of the website/engine in your language, get in touch and we’ll provide that — the creation of the engine using the resources in your language such as forum, website, discussion list, wiki, and so on, and also a subdomain for your language (the Brazilian Portuguese, br.uboontu.com, is most likely to be the first).

Any help is appreciated, as I am not a webdesigner the website can be greatly improved, so if you are a web developer and want to help, get in touch.

Have a good search!
